Why Can’t You Get To Sleep?
If you are having trouble sleeping then it can be really hard to find out what the problem is. There is probably going to be more than one problem you have to solve, and the list of possible problems is a long one. A really common problem that people don’t realize is that you aren’t taking the time at night to relax before you try and sleep. Our lives are so hectic that we go straight from watching TV to bed, or straight from surfing the internet to bed. Watching some television doesn’t sound like it would affect your sleep like maybe a visit to the gym just before bed might, but the shows are full of color and noise and make it hard for your brain to unwind. It is much better to sit and read for 10 minutes before you go to bed instead, or even do some light stretching , anything to help you relax your mind and help the transition between your daytime activities and sleeping.
Something else which might keep you awake is noise during the night when you are trying to sleep, like a gate creaking, or a clock ticking, things that you will fixate on. You can try using ear plugs to drown out noises, but they tend to be uncomfortable and not really meant for prolonged use. A white noise generator like the Marpac Sleepmate is a gentler way to drown out the noises, it generates a calming whooshing noise throughout the night to stop the other noises appearing so loud. Or if you have something which generates a nice consistent noise, like a room dehumidifier, then putting that in your bedroom can be a good solution.
