Teeth Whitening

There are a variety of ways to whiten your teeth, not least:

Toothpaste

Nowadays, Most toothpaste manufacturers produce a variation of whitening toothpaste. Whitening toothpastes can contain strong abrasives or chemicals that can remove some stains on the outermost layers of a tooth. In fact, today they are viewed as a very low cost and low tech way to make your teeth look whiter. Because they do not actually increase the whiteness of the teeth, they work by removing stains from the teeth which in turn make the teeth appear whiter. Whitening toothpastes contain either additional polishing agents or abrasives similar with the regular toothpastes but with higher granularity.

There are many other whitening toothpastes currently available, all claiming to whiten teeth. The BBC Television Programme Health Watchdog acknowledged that Janina Tooth Whitening products were the only products (compared with other known whitening toothpaste brands) which contain ingredients with the ability to whiten teeth. Because whitening toothpastes can only affect the outer enamel layer, they do not affect yellowing of the inner dentin layer. In fact, sometimes whitening toothpaste can make inner-layer discoloring more noticeable.

While these whitening toothpastes may be somewhat effective in removing stains from the outermost layer of your teeth, they can destroy tooth enamel in the process, particularly if used for extended periods of time. Daily brushing (with non-whitening toothpaste) and flossing minimize discoloration, as can professional cleaning at your dentist’s office.

So, whilst whitening toothpaste may be cheap, it can also be harmful if not used correctly so please be careful.
