Pest control in Stockport, Didsbury, Cheadle and Gatley 2010

Submitted by on Sunday December 12, 2010 No Comments

Pest Control in the North West has seen a brisk start in 2010 which is somewhat surprising given the relatively colder (weather of this last winter|winter of 2009/10}.

Pest and Vermin controllers were kept occupied with the usual town centre rat problems throughout the winter of 2009/10, but the relatively cold early part of the year has already seen ant infestations reported.

The fairly wet summers of the last few years were not to the taste of the hymenoptera (bees, ants, sawflies and wasps) but this year looks like it will turn out to be a busy year for flying ant calls.

Usually ants make nests under the floors of buildings and inside cavity walls causing a lot of foraging ants to invade food store areas.

However it is at the mating time when they are at their most troublesome as they create winged males and queens which then mate in flight.

The appearance of many thousands of these winged ants inside houses can be horrible in the extreme.

A relatively new pest was quite prevalant in the the North West area last season, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).

It was not common for pest operatives in Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire to meet these pests until recent times but they seemed to appear from nowhere in 2008 and already this season has seen sightings of varied carpet beetle in large numbers.

They have a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, known as woolly bears devour natural fibres and can do great damage to carpets and all fabrics. They can be a difficult and persistent pest to eradicate.

Those who work in in pest control have noted that Bed Bugs are carrying on their return in the Lancashire, Manchester and Cheshire area, regularly arriving as hitch-hikers in the suitcases of returning holiday makers.

Regularly the first reaction of unfortunates who realise that they are infested with these horrible,blood-sucking creatures is to burn the old beds and get.

This is an unneccesary mistake as despite their name bed bugs not only live in beds and in an infested room will be found everywhere within up to fifteen feet of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical and telephone sockets and the new beds will be rapidly re-infested.

Most people confuse bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye. They both require a different form of gatley pest control.

They dine solely on blood which they take from their sleeping hosts. People regularly associate bed bugs with dirty conditions but nothing could be less accurate, they do not need grime, they eat you!
