Ma Qingyun accepted the job as dean of the University of Southern California’s prestigious School of Architecture due to the fact he was weary of getting his own boss.
His private Chinese firm MADA s.p.a.m. had grown to become highly profitable, but he located himself repeating related projects and felt restless cheap timberland boots.
“Architecture alone does not have the full capacity to engage social and financial concerns, and a lot of urban and environmental issues cannot be resolved purely via building,” he says.
“I felt incapable of addressing some of these troubles and I thought, ‘What should I do to refresh my view of what’s happening on the planet and in China to be able to find solutions?’”
As an entrepreneurial designer, his work was no longer critically evaluated or judged, he says, so when the university launched its search for a brand new dean in 2006, he jumped at the challenge.
“The architecture school at USC is in the crossroads of design intelligence and technologies integration. Design has a large role in commanding or specifying one of the most advanced technologies, and nowadays it is genuinely about sustainability, environmental sciences, and how these technologies aspects are becoming integrated together to serve design intentions,” he says.
“This will be the tradition and core mission of the school, so what I’m performing there is certainly in hopes of enhancing that tradition and putting it in a international context.”
In 2008 Ma founded the American Academy, a graduate plan via USC’s School of Architecture that operates in China. The plan immerses American students inside the study of special architectural and city planning troubles in China Nike Free Shoes.
Each year the program focuses on a specific subject that’s relevant to Chinese architecture. As an example, inside the 1st year students studied “convergence in divergence”.
“Because the speed of investment in China is so high, cities have a tendency to grow into multiple dimensions and there is a coexistence of style and technology. A very chaotic urbanism exists in China but it’s also managed and coordinated into a coherent energy. That is really uncommon in Western urbanism. It’s a uniquely Chinese urban paradigm.”
