Free Electricity With Solar Power

Submitted by on Friday April 22, 2011 No Comments

Well maybe not completely free yet it is close enough to free to what is currently possible. Before I give you details of solar panels and solar energy I want to tell you a personal story. My mother had recently moved into a complex which had been built with solar panels on the roofs of the entire establishment. Only after a month and a half of being in her new apartment did she need to switch on her geyser. For that entire time her water had been heated by solar heating. That means that for one month she had free electricity! Bearing in mind that the electricity from these panels are were also going to other people’s apartments.

In South Africa energy generated from solar power can be a main source of energy for all people if the proper initiatives are set in place to make solar energy available to all. South Africa receives an average of 2500 hours of sunlight a year. Being the country with the most hours of sunlight in the world.

My mother lives in a complex which has been built for low to medium income families. The entire complex uses solar panels. This is a government initiative which has rolled out across South Africa, in a bid to minimize the amount of energy needed to be generated electricity. It also means that low and medium income houses will benefit on electricity savings.

The solar water heater programme.

Heating water takes a lot of energy, the amount accounts for as much as 1/2 of the household energy usage. Meaning that when water is heated by solar energy the electricity bill is cut by this much. This is great news for residential and commercial sectors alike as well as for the country.

Photovoltaic panels which is the proper name for Solar panels work by converting solar energy into electricity. The panels consist of a sheet of glass with another sheet of silicon under it. This sheet of silicon contains positive and negative particles, when the sun hits this sheet the negatively charged particles caught by small wires. These wires are connected in circuit, and an electrical current is formed. This electrical current is then passed through an inverter turning it into the proper electric current for home usage.

It has been shown that if Africa utilises solar energy correctly we will have enough energy to supply all of Africa’s needs as well as part of Europe. This is proof that the world can switch to clean energy, using free solar energy from the sun.

You can find a solar panel supplier online, and find out how you can make the switch to solar energy. The initial costs of buying and installing solar panels are expensive but you can get a rebate from government. In a bid to promote the installation and usage of solar panels, Government has offered people a rebate if they switch to solar energy. Do your bit to help our environment by switching to solar energy. Not only will you be helping the environment but you will also be saving money!
