Many people don’t realize it but having a good high quality cutting board is an absolute must if you plan on cooking meals and preparing food for yourself. There are many types of cutting boards to choose from. They range in the style of cutting board such as butcher chopping blocks and small cutting boards for cheese.

The material they are made of also varies from glass, plastic and all different types of wood. Below you will find some of the pros and cons of each material as a  cutting board for your kitchen.

Wooden cutting boards are perhaps the oldest type of cutting board since the material has been available for ages. Many people are concerned if wooden cutting boards are an issue due to sanitation. They can often harbor bacteria if they aren’t sanitized properly, but some wood such as bamboo cutting boards is a great material because it is actually anti-micro bacterial.

Next there are plastic cutting boards which are the newest of materials to be used. They are usually the most popular in the average household due to the fact that they are so cheap and easy to take care of. Plastic cutting boards are non porous so you don’t have to worry as much about bacteria getting into the material. They are very safe since they can be properly sanitized in a dishwasher and do not chip away to expose sharp edges.

Glass or tempered glass cutting boards are also very popular. They are often the most visually appealing and can range widely in design and color. They are great for use when dealing with heat such as a cooling plate to rest baking trays on. Glass cutting boards have a drawback in the sound they make when you are cutting on them and they can dull knives faster than other material. They also have a tendency to chip the corners after a lot of use so they can be unsafe.
