Clothing for Girl babies

Submitted by on Wednesday September 8, 2010 No Comments

Typically when we think of girls baby clothes we think of pink, and for boys baby clothes we think of blue. The girls baby clothes you usually find are pink, frilly and cutesy while boys baby clothes are blue and fittingly, more masculine. Even at this age, babies are categorized by gender and the clothes available to them are presented as such. Take this study the same baby was strolled through the park 2 times, one time wearing girls clothes, and the other time wearing clothes for boys. When dressed as a female, the baby was complimented by park goers as being such a pretty girl. When dressed as a male, the baby was complimented as a good looks for a boy. The babies’ behavior was also differentiated according to attire. Liberal feminists point to this study as contributing to evidence that essentially there is no difference between males and females. People couldn’t tell the sex of the baby from appearance alone and depended on visual cues like girls baby clothing, and then they interpreted the behavior of the baby according to established views of gender.

This may be true, but it’s also hard to deny that later on in life, it isn’t so difficult to tell males and females apart by how they look. There’s also no denying that generally there are trends that differentiate men and women, whether in personality characteristics or behavior. Cultural feminists would be line with the view that men and women are different but both should be celebrated, but liberal feminists would see this simply as the influence of society. In one point of view, girls baby clothes and boys baby clothes are simply a reflection of that difference, whereas in another perspective this is an arbitrary cultural construct that is ingrained in individuals from birth.

How a bay is dress matterrs little to the baby itself, and what they wear is determined by an external influence, their parents. If they have a daughter, then most likely she’ll be dressed in girls baby clothes and vice versa with a son. As the child grows older, they’ll learn what is appropriate for their sex and act accordingly. At the same time, it’s not like they don’t have minds of their own and they’ll also act according to their own preferences. Individuals are heavily influenced by society but they still make choices, and they outgrow their baby clothes quite quickly.
